Spring season is right around the corner, and we all know what that means … it’s time for spring cleaning! Spring cleaning is the perfect time to refresh and declutter your living space. We’re here to provide some helpful tips for a successful spring decluttering project!

TIPS TO GET STARTED

Looking at all of the junk in your entire home can become discouraging and deter you from starting. We always say, “Think big”, but “think small” for this project.

Start off in one room. Set a time goal. In that one room, begin to look at your surface items. Ask yourself if you need it, want it, or is it just taking up space. If it’s not a necessity, then see if you can find a designated place for it without cluttering your space. In many situations, you can certainly make a decision to toss it if it hasn’t been used/worn in the past year! Designate 3 bins — one for trash, one for recycling, and one for donations.

Adding tasks to your spring cleaning, such as washing windows and dusting, can help brighten up your space.

BENEFITS OF DECLUTTERING

Decluttering can become quite overwhelming, but the end results can pay off. Having a decluttered space can be beneficial in many ways. This can create more square footage in the house, more mental space to focus, and a reduced ecological footprint, just to name a few!

You’ll have a newfound appreciation for your home, as you may have been thinking that it’s time to move for more space. Getting rid of unwanted items can reduce your stress and anxiety levels. You’ll have fewer distractions in your home, allowing you to think more clearly. Getting rid of your unwanted items like electronics results in using fewer resources.

Furthermore, when you decide to recycle or donate the items, you’re contributing to minimizing waste.

TOSS IT, BUT DON’T WASTE IT!

Give your unwanted items a new lease on life by finding them a new home. Organizing a neighborhood swap meet is a fun way to declutter and connect with your community.

Many places are accepting of gently used items, including Goodwill, Open Doors of Westfield, Habitat for Humanity, St. Vincent de Paul Society, and Holy Family Shelter Indianapolis. There are also recycling centers available to take certain recyclables, such as Ace Scrap Metal in Cicero and Green Wave Computer Recycling (best to check with the establishments for details prior to arriving).

You can also sell your unwanted items online or at a consignment shop to make some extra money in addition to avoiding the landfill. Arranging a garage sale is also a way to make some money while minimizing landfill waste.

These sustainable practices help keep reusable items out of landfills and benefit others.
